Photo Shoot

Oscar Night, originally uploaded by MrsBinParis.

It's happened. The Mom thing. Not caring what my hair looks like. Not wearing makeup, for days. Heels? Nah. Jeans, jeans, and more jeans. Long sleeved t-shirts, hoodies and cardigans: comfortable, washable and warm enough. Why wear earrings when she's just going to pull them out? Who needs a fashionable scarf when she'll just yank on it and choke me?

Who needs to look pretty for an 8-month old?

Wait.

Oh yeah.

It's not just for them. It's for me, too.

This was Oscar night. Dr. B wasn't home and Rowan was down for the night, so I girled out. Curled my hair in big silly corkscrews, put on goofy makeup, and took a whole bunch of photos of myself hamming it up in the bathroom mirror. Then I toasted all the celebs who haven't eaten for a month with Girl Scout cookies and 2% milk.

These are a few of the photos, unretouched, just compiled. This is what I really look like. And see that smile? It's real, too.

I have to do this more often. For me.

Oh, sweet! You look so good in curls. I love curly curls like that. I wish my hair would do that naturally.

Even when you're not decked out in makeup you look great. You wear mom so well and this look as well.

I missed the oscars, how were they? Marion Clotillard won, I know that much.

The last photo is my FAVOURITE. Sassy, indeed. There are no rules out there that say that you are ONLY a mother. You're also a wife, a woman, a friend, a lover (not that I KNOW this last one from personal experience, but I'm ASSUMING)... You know where I'm going. You have a million identities, all in one. Embrace it :)

As Billy Crystal, former Oscar night host, used to say: You look MAHVELOUS!

Now... whatever you do, do NOT get sucked into looking like a typical American soccer mom in sloppy "comfy" clothes and not bothering with hair, makeup, cute shoes (even flats) or a scarf. Be one of the exceptions to the rule! Become a "French Paradox" of your own! Remember all those young, chic French moms you used to see on the streets here in Paris, looking totally put together while pushing their strollers? Most of them look amazing, and although for the life of me I can't figure out how they manage to pull it off given the demands on them as new mothers, I sure do admire their ability to keep themselves looking good. It makes me, a non-Maman, want to try harder with my appearance.

Of course, they could be doing it not for themselves but to keep their husbands' eyes from roving. You know how competitive French women can be over men. At least that's what all the books say.

Thanks, guys! :) I needed that.

I wish my hair did this naturally, too. It's too much work. But cute! Probably will do this for my sister's reception.

I know, I know, what you're saying... but we do need to remind our selves of this, non? And Lisa, don't worry, I'd never leave the house (OK, except for walking the dog) without a little makeup and hair done, though I may be wearing jeans and a T when I do (I try for the scarf, but it depends on how grabby the monster is...) It's just at home that I get a bit complacent.

Oh, and I just noticed that for some reason, on the main page it is capitalizing everything in the comments. Weird. Gotta figure out how to fix that.

OK, time to feed the evil monkey.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the hair! Very cute! Very Marilyn Monroe. I recently bought a new bigger curling iron and mine can look close to that too. Though maybe not so much volume, since it's still long.
